Capstone Turbine Corporation Releases Ultra Low Emission CR200 kW Product Certified to Stringent California Air Resources Board (CARB) Requirements for Landfill Gas Applications

CHATSWORTH, Calif., Nov. 4, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Capstone Turbine Corporation (www.capstoneturbine.com) (Nasdaq:CPST), the world's leading clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, announced today it released the CR200 Low Btu microturbine product that meets the world's most challenging global emission requirements, including California's stringent Waste Gas Emission Standard.

Landfill applications are a key market for the Capstone CR200 200 kW renewable energy product. Waste gas typically refers to gas which is produced by the biological breakdown of organic matter. Producing energy using gas from these applications which is otherwise flared avoids the need to use non-renewable resources such as coal, oil, or natural gas to produce an equivalent amount of energy.

Certification to the waste fuel emissions standard by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) makes approved technologies such as the CR200 much easier to site in California – often avoiding any local air permitting at all.

Capstone microturbines are capable of burning waste gases with methane contents as low as 30%, which can be challenging for competing combustion technologies. Capstone's low premix combustion technology used to achieve the CARB emissions standard requires no exhaust after treatment, which avoids additional capital equipment costs and reduces ongoing maintenance costs.

Capstone announced earlier this year that it entered into a three-year OEM agreement with Calnetix Power Systems to supply its new, innovative, 125kW waste heat recovery generator system. The ability to harness 125kW of additional exhaust driven electricity will add over 7% to the total system efficiency of our current products and make Capstone even more competitive in landfill applications.

"California landfills are a great market opportunity for the Capstone microturbine product," said Jim Crouse, Capstone's Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "We are excited to offer our customers a product that is accepted by the State of California and supports our state's aggressive sustainability initiatives."

"Renewable energy applications like landfills are a core part of Capstone's business," said Darren Jamison, President and Chief Executive Officer of Capstone Turbine Corporation. "Certification of the CR200 to these extremely stringent standards allows Capstone to continue to expand its market penetration and continues to demonstrate that Capstone is an industry leader in ultra low combustion emissions," added Jamison.
